"Profile of a Farm Worker - A Case Study in Effectively Serving the Underserved" presented by Amy Wolfe and Terence Mulligan
California’s multi-billion dollar agricultural industry is served by nearly 750,000 tireless, dedicated immigrant farm workers. In various regions around the state, such as the world-renowned Napa Valley, these men and women are an integral part of the economy and the community. In recent years, this once-migrant population has put down roots and settled in place. This shift has brought about new challenges in areas like housing, education and social services. Both the Napa Valley Community Foundation and AgSafe have taken deliberate, albeit different, steps to address the needs of farm workers and the communities in which they reside. In this session we will: discuss research conducted to more fully understand the opportunities and challenges presented by changing workforce and community demographics in California’s diverse agricultural counties; debunk some common myths about the economic and fiscal impact of immigration at a local level; examine specific programs that have been created to help immigrant families – and the regions that welcome them – succeed; and talk about how this work can be replicated in other regions with significant immigrant populations.
